A unconfirmed report that had gone viral on Wednesday, suggesting Karan Johar has been dropped as co-producer of the much-hyped Akshay Kumar-starrer Sooryavanshi, has been refuted as “fake news” by the makers.

Late on Wednesday, social media was abuzz with reports that the film’s director Rohit Shetty and lead star Akshay Kumar have dropped Johar’s Dharma Productions and its share from the film, further claiming that they had even returned Johar’s investment in the film.

Soon, the film’s producers and presenter Reliance Entertainment were confirming that the news doing rounds of Johar not being part of Sooryavanshi is incorrect.

Trade expert Taran Adarsh also tweeted: “IMPORTANT… News doing the rounds of #KaranJohar not being part of #Sooryavanshi is untrue, clarifies #RelianceEntertainment.”

In Sooryavanshi, Akshay will be seen as ATS officer Veer Sooryavanshi, on a lookout for terrorists planning a deadly strike on Mumbai. Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh will also reprise their roles of Singham and Simmba in cameos, to help Akshay bust the terror plot.

Actress Katrina Kaif will be seen as Veer Sooryavanshi’s wife while Jackie Shroff plays the antagonist.

Sooryavanshi also features Gulshan Grover, Abhimanyu Singh, Niharica Raizada, Sikandar Kher and Nikitin Dheer. The film is presented by Reliance Entertainment.

The news comes a day after it was announced that Sooryavanshi will release in theatres during Diwali this year.

Meanwhile, Karan Johar has been at the receiving end of a volley of criticism after the news of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death broke. Sushant died by suicide on June 14 and it is alleged that “professional rivalry” may have had a role to play. However, actor Swara Bhasker and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma have defended Karan, calling the social media backlash ‘height of idiocy’. With the debate around nepotism reignited, Karan has also unfollowed several accounts on Twitter.

Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif and Kabir Khan’s 83 with Ranveer Singh in the lead are reported to have a theatrical release this year on Diwali and Christmas, respectively. While there has been no official confirmation from the filmmakers or the actors yet, multiplex chain INOX shared the information via their official Twitter handle.

The tweet read: “Mark your calendars! We are getting ready to bring you Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi on Diwali and Kabir Khan’s 83 on Christmas THIS YEAR!”

Film trade analyst, Akshaye Rathi too tweeted about the same.

Akshay Kumar’s film was set to hit the screens on March 24. The makers of Sooryavanshi were expecting massive box office numbers because the release had been strategically planned to coincide with Gudi Padwa holiday (new year for Marathi and Konkani community). But the country went into full coronavirus lockdown on March 24. Made on a reported budget of Rs 135 crore, Sooryavanshi also features Katrina Kaif and Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn in an extended cameo.

Likewise, Ranveer Singh’s upcoming film 83 was earlier slated to hit the screens on April 10. The Kabir Khan-directed 83 tells the story of India’s first-ever cricket World Cup victory in 1983. The film also stars Ranveer’s wife Deepika Padukone, who will be seen playing Kapil’s wife Romi. It also features Tahir Raj Bhasin, Ammy Virk, Sahil Khattar, Hardy Sandhu and Saqib Saleem.

Meanwhile, on Monday it was announced that seven Bollywood movies will be releasing directly on Disney+ Hotstar. These are Akshay Kumar-starrer Laxmmi Bomb, Ajay Devgn’s Bhuj: The Pride Of India, Sadak 2 starring Alia Bhatt, Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara, The Big Bull starring Abhishek Bachchan, Vidyut Jammwal-starrer Khuda Haafiz and Lootcase featuring Kunal Kemmu.

Earlier, in May, spanning five Indian languages, Amazon Prime Video had announced the release of Amitabh Bachchan-Ayushmann Khurrana’s Gulabo Sitabo along with Anu Menon’s Shakuntala Devi with Vidya Balan in lead, legal drama Ponmagal Vandhal starring Jyotika in addition to Keerthy Suresh starrer Penguin (Tamil and Telugu), Sufiyum Sujatayum (Malayalam), Law (Kannada) and French Biryani (Kannada).

The announcement had led to a massive debate of films releasing directly on OTT platforms vs traditional theater.

Rohit Shetty’s popular Golmaal franchise saw four successful films making noise at the box-office. The last one in the comedy film series was Golmaal Again, a horror comedy starring Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu, Shreyas Talpade and Johnny Lever, who reprised their roles, as well as Parineeti Chopra, Tabu, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Prakash Raj who were first-time additions.

Now, the hit film will be the fist Bollywood movie to re-release in Covid-free New Zealand. Rohit Shetty took to Instagram to announce the news. He wrote, “New Zealand decides to re-release Golmaal Again in theatres making it the First Hindi Film to get a relaunch post covid. New Zealand is now covid free and is opening its theatres on 25th June with Golmaal Again. As it is rightly said – ‘THE SHOW MUST GO ON… (sic).”

Rohit is a frequent collaborator with close friend Ajay, who has appeared in all four Golmaal films, Bol Bachchan and the filmmaker’s cop universe films including Singham 1 and 2, Simmba and the upcoming Sooryavanshi. Ajay had announced on November 2019 that they will be collaborating again in Golmaal 5.

“A film franchise which is not only the longest running one in hindi cinema but also happens to be one of my favourites! Prepare yourself for yet another laugh riot with #GolmaalFive (sic),” he had written on Instagram.

Meanwhile, Rohit’s Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Ranveer Singh and Ajay was scheduled to release on March 24, 2020 but has been postponed due to the coronavirus spread.
