Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif and Kabir Khan’s 83 with Ranveer Singh in the lead are reported to have a theatrical release this year on Diwali and Christmas, respectively. While there has been no official confirmation from the filmmakers or the actors yet, multiplex chain INOX shared the information via their official Twitter handle.

The tweet read: “Mark your calendars! We are getting ready to bring you Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi on Diwali and Kabir Khan’s 83 on Christmas THIS YEAR!”

Film trade analyst, Akshaye Rathi too tweeted about the same.

Akshay Kumar’s film was set to hit the screens on March 24. The makers of Sooryavanshi were expecting massive box office numbers because the release had been strategically planned to coincide with Gudi Padwa holiday (new year for Marathi and Konkani community). But the country went into full coronavirus lockdown on March 24. Made on a reported budget of Rs 135 crore, Sooryavanshi also features Katrina Kaif and Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn in an extended cameo.

Likewise, Ranveer Singh’s upcoming film 83 was earlier slated to hit the screens on April 10. The Kabir Khan-directed 83 tells the story of India’s first-ever cricket World Cup victory in 1983. The film also stars Ranveer’s wife Deepika Padukone, who will be seen playing Kapil’s wife Romi. It also features Tahir Raj Bhasin, Ammy Virk, Sahil Khattar, Hardy Sandhu and Saqib Saleem.

Meanwhile, on Monday it was announced that seven Bollywood movies will be releasing directly on Disney+ Hotstar. These are Akshay Kumar-starrer Laxmmi Bomb, Ajay Devgn’s Bhuj: The Pride Of India, Sadak 2 starring Alia Bhatt, Sushant Singh Rajput’s last film Dil Bechara, The Big Bull starring Abhishek Bachchan, Vidyut Jammwal-starrer Khuda Haafiz and Lootcase featuring Kunal Kemmu.

Earlier, in May, spanning five Indian languages, Amazon Prime Video had announced the release of Amitabh Bachchan-Ayushmann Khurrana’s Gulabo Sitabo along with Anu Menon’s Shakuntala Devi with Vidya Balan in lead, legal drama Ponmagal Vandhal starring Jyotika in addition to Keerthy Suresh starrer Penguin (Tamil and Telugu), Sufiyum Sujatayum (Malayalam), Law (Kannada) and French Biryani (Kannada).

The announcement had led to a massive debate of films releasing directly on OTT platforms vs traditional theater.

Is Ajay Devgn Starrer Bhuj: The Pride of India Eyeing Vijay Diwas Release?

Ajay Devgn-Sanjay Dutt starrer Bhuj: The Pride of India, which was scheduled to release on Independence Day 2020, will likely be postponed due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

  • Last Updated: May 22, 2020, 3:20 PM IST

Abhishek Dudhaiya’s upcoming film Bhuj: The Pride of India, based on the 1971 Indo-Pak war was scheduled to release on Independence Day, but will reportedly be pushed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Producers were reportedly eyeing Republic Day 2021 release but are now considering a more appropriate date.

Now, according to a new report in Mid-day, the makers are considering December 16th as the release date as it is the 49th anniversary of Vijay Diwas, when India won the war in 1971.

A source quoted in the publication said, “A week-long stint that includes filming some action sequences featuring Ajay Devgn, is left. Initially, the makers were toying with the idea of releasing it on January 26 next year, but then realised that Vijay Diwas, which commemorates India’s victory in the 1971 war, is celebrated on December 16. It is only fitting that a retelling of a chapter from the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war arrive at the theatres around the same time.”

The source also said that even though Ajay’s other 2020 release Maidaan was scheduled to release on December 11th, it is far from completion. “Maidaan will be ready for release only in 2021. The makers were also contemplating a Diwali release for Bhuj, but decided against it because so many big-ticket projects are vying for the slot,” the source added.

Apart from Ajay, the film stars Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Nora Fatehi, Ammy Virk amongst others. It tells the story of how 300 women repaired a damaged strip of landing in a Bhuj airport overnight, which helped India’s victory in the war.

Sonakshi Sinha is missing friends and going to work, but doesn’t mind sitting at her home in lockdown if “it means that we can stop the spread of the virus”. The actress feels fortunate to be at home with her loved ones during the pandemic, and says that the crisis has made everyone realise not to take things for granted.

“I miss my friends but that’s really not even an issue if you put things in perspective. I’m okay with the lockdown if it means that we can stop the spread of the virus. It made everyone realise not to take things for granted,” Sonakshi told IANS while talking about how she is coping up with the lockdown.

Asked about the most challenging thing she had to do during the lockdown, Sonakshi said: “Nothing. I am fortunate to be at home with my loved ones. When you look around and see people who are away from their homes, families, not being able to feed themselves…those are the challenges. My heart goes out to them and all I want to do is help.”

The actress understands that “we are all in this together”, and is hoping “for the best”.

The lockdown might have kept Sonakshi away from work, but also gave her a chance to reconnect with art. Now, the “Dabangg” star has decided to auction her art for a good cause.

“I reconnected with my art during the lockdown and have been wanting to help out on a bigger scale… so I put two and two together and decided to raise funds with my art,” she said.

Talking about her influences, Sonakshi said: “I don’t have any influences. It’s something that just flows from within me, and I keep trying out new things on my own.”

Sonakshi has decided to auction her artworks to raise a fund which will help her provide ration kits to daily wage workers. The artworks include digital prints, sketches and large canvas paintings made by the actress. For this initiative, Sonakshi Sinha has collaborated with actor Arjun Kapoor’s sister Anshula Kapoor’s online fundraising platform Fankind.

Sonakshi, daughter of actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha and Poonam Sinha, feels uniting to help the frontline workers amid the virus outbreak is the “need of the hour”.

“Never in our wildest dreams did we think we would ever be in a situation like this… and I feel that if we have a roof over our heads, food on our plates and are able to keep ourselves safe, we are privileged. And being so, it’s our duty to take care of those who aren’t as fortunate as us,” said the actress.

On the work front, she will soon be seen in Bhuj: The Pride of India. The film also stars Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Sharad Kelkar, Ammy Virk and Pranitha Subhash.
