Bihar minister, MLA infected, but Covid case doubling time increases in Bihar

With a cabinet minister and his wife testing positive for Covid-19 in Bihar along with 389 new cases surfacing in the last 24 hours, coronavirus continues to be a massive threat in Bihar, a state with an impressive 78% recovery rate. Apart from the minister and his wife, another MLA from north Bihar has also been found infected with coronavirus.

The minister, who has tested positive, has been kept at an isolation centre in a hotel in Katihar along with his wife. Meanwhile, former Union Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh has recovered from Covid-19.

Health Secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh on Monday said as many as 218 people have recovered from coronavirus in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recovered patients to 7,374 in Bihar. Out of the 9,506 coronavirus cases recorded in Bihar so far, the number of active cases stands at 2,069 as of Monday.

In yet another major relief for Bihar, the doubling time of coronavirus positive cases in Bihar has also gone up to 23 days against the earlier 13 days. Health officials believe this to be a positive indicator as the doubling time has also increased despite a corresponding increase in the number of tests.

The number of positive cases on May 23 was 2,263 while the testing done was 61,220.

Coronavirus cases doubled from 2,263 on May 23 to 4,451 on June 5 — in a span of 13 days — while the testing done was 91,903. On June 28, the cases doubled to reach 9,117 after a gap of 23 days, while the testing till date was more than double to 2,05,832.

Health secretary Lokesh Kumar Singh said that the number of days in doubling of Covid cases increased by 10 in Bihar, indicating the pace of infection had also slowed down.

In the medical bulletin released on Monday, the Bihar Health Department confirmed that a maximum of 347 active cases are in Patna, followed by 153 in Madhubani and 138 in Bhagalpur.
